Chicken Tidbits:

ˈtid-ˌbit - noun
1: a small piece of food
2: a small piece of information

Chickens have a natural instinct to roost in high places. This behavior is rooted in their ancestry, where roosting off the ground protected them from predators. Providing roosting bars in your coop can keep your chickens happy and healthy, mimicking their natural habitat and reducing stress.

Sean Shares Something Short

Happy Twosday to my peeps!

As we step into August, I'm grateful and excited to share some personal insights and updates with you.

First, I got great feedback on how often you want me in your inbox. So, I will continue delivering the newsletter twice a week, but keep it short and simple. There will be a feature article each month for Growing Food and Growing People, and the other issues will focus on more useful and valuable content for you, the reader. More “how tos” and educational content and less long-form story…

I must tell ya that the past month has been a whirlwind of activities, challenges, and triumphs, all of which underscore our incredible journey together!

Our recent ‘Cakes & Eggs’ event on August 4th was a perfect example of turning obstacles into opportunities. The day started with a major hiccup—our Dodge Chrysler van, loaded with all our tables, refused to start. The jumper pack didn't work, and I couldn't get the back latch to open, so the 8’ tables were seemingly stuck.

In a moment of utter frustration, I felt like throwing in the towel on the whole nonprofit—like literally quitting…

But after taking a deep breath (thankfully practicing what I preach), I reached out to my support network; they brought their trucks and magic touch, and together, we got things back on track.

Despite some technical glitches, including an invite mishap and issues with a new ticket platform, we had a higher sales revenue this year than last. About a dozen families and several individual attendees joined us, creating a vibrant and engaging atmosphere.

Community engagement was heartening. Families enjoyed a breakfast of pancakes and eggs, participated in egg games, visited a pop-up library, voted on door prizes, and watched an exciting chicken race.

A woman who fosters children inquired about how Blooming Health Farms could support her foster kids, opening new avenues for our mission. The owner from Pawnee Butte Seed and his partner Casey engaged deeply with our cause, discussing things over breakfast.

Financially, the event was a success. Thanks to ticket sales, a door prize raffle, and a book sale, we raised just over $6,500! The funds raised will be pivotal in supporting our mission.

A significant portion is allocated towards procuring a shipping container from Denco in Denver, which will help us expand our infrastructure and increase our capacity to support at-risk youth.

However, the true victory lay in our connections and the community spirit evident throughout the day. Moving forward, I am planning a volunteer appreciation event and egg-cited to talk more about the ‘Good Egg Club’ to build a more sustainable and impactful Blooming Health Farms.

Special thanks to Ethan and his family, Kile and Ashleigh, April, Jess, Jeff from J&T Feeds, Jolene, Kristen, Claudia, Clark, Travis, Chelsea, Don and Casey from Pawnee Butte Seed, Anthony Navarro, Jeremy and Ashley Fusco, Tim and Alex from the Clay Center of Northern Colorado, Colleen, my dad, and everyone who helped make the event a success.

Check out our Facebook group page here for LOTS of photos and feedback from the event. And check back often, as more information is trickling in…
