They say you can’t serve from an empty cup. Well, mine wasn’t just empty, it was cracked.
I have been juggling everything...coops, feed runs, nonprofit logistics, mentoring youth, and still trying to figure out how to keep the lights on at Blooming Health.
Thankfully, folks were driving two hours just to pick up feed from us. Which felt like a win. But deep down, I knew it wasn’t sustainable. I’d mastered the science. Hydroponics, fodder, sprouting. Ask anyone, I could geek out about all that all day. But business? That part was still in process. I didn’t want to just “do good.” I wanted to build something that could last. Something that could support our mission without begging for donations.
That’s when I went quiet.
The Old Model Wasn’t Broken. It Was Just... Rotten.
You ever get this gut feeling something's off? Like you're selling a "better product" but it's still part of a broken system?
That’s what happened with our feed. I am proud to offer organic chicken, yet I knew it wasn’t the best I could give our chickens, or your chickens for that matter. I kept hearing this quote in my head:
“You don’t fight the old model by changing it. You create a new model that makes the old one obsolete.”
So I stopped selling what was “better,” and figuring out what was right.
Where It All Led: Seed. Feed. And Something More.
Many of you know that Blooming Health Farms started with chickens back in 2022. My backyard was more than a place for hens, it became a classroom, a sanctuary, and a launchpad. It even inspired me to write Thinking Outside the Soil because I saw firsthand that hydroponics could change how we feed animals... and how we feed people.
We all start with chickens, don’t we?
For me it was six hens, a backyard, and a bunch of dreams to keep kids out of jail like the adults I sat next to inside of cells.
But food? That’s the real foundation.
You are what you eat. And you are what your food eats.
That’s why I began sprouting grains. Not just for the nutritional bump, but because when I watched my birds go wild for live feed, something clicked. Their instincts woke up. And honestly? So did mine.
When folks saw those sprouts, it did something to them, too. It stirred something ancient, like this hunger for food that’s alive... food that’s honest.
Welcome to Blooming Health Seed & Feed
This isn’t just a new product line. It’s a revolution that sprouted from a bucket…though the business name WILL be rebranded as we grow. IYKYK
At Blooming Health Seed & Feed, we’re doing things differently:
Live sprouted feed, made on-site.
Shelf-stable buckets for folks who want the benefits without the fuss.
A place where you can talk chicken, swap tips, and feel like you belong.
Online and in-person. Backyard flocks and barnyard rebels.
This is a movement. And you’re already part of it. So if you’ve been wondering why I went silent…
I was just planting, collecting, polishing…
And now it’s time to bloom.
I hope you enjoy this issue, and stay tuned for today’s podcast and Friday’s newsletter!
Farm Updates
We’ve got a few grants in the works that could help us take the next big step in our Egg-to-Table expansion. The dream? To connect every part of the process — from feed to flock to food — under one roof. A place where fresh eggs, youth mentorship, and community meals all come together.
If the funding comes through, we’ll be building out a dedicated Egg-to-Table classroom and processing space — where students and visitors can learn exactly how sustainable farming feeds people, not just chickens.
It’s still in the “sprouting” stage, but like every seed we plant here, it’s rooted in good soil and steady faith.
