Happy Twosday to you!
As the seasons shift, I reflect on the journey we’ve all been on together—especially as we dive into our latest project here on the farm. This month, we’re pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in sustainable agriculture, turning an idea I sketched over a year ago into a reality. Our new chicken coop, built from a repurposed shipping container, is more than just an innovative solution—it’s a testament to what we can achieve when we think outside the soil.
But it’s not just about the big projects. Sometimes, the most profound changes come from the smallest beginnings. I’m reminded of my days in that Hawaiian dorm room, where my first early attempts at sprouting seeds in a Powerade bottle set me on a path I never imagined.
Those early experiences taught me that resourcefulness and a bit of creativity can go a long way—whether you’re feeding yourself or a flock of hungry chickens.
In this edition of the Blooming Health Bulletin, I’m excited to share updates on our new coop, some DIY tips for sprouting at home, and how you can get involved in the farm’s latest endeavors. Let’s continue growing food, growing people, and growing hope together.
I hope you enjoy this issue!
Farm Updates
Our latest project is officially underway, and we couldn't be more excited! After a year of planning and design, our shipping container from Denco in Denver has finally arrived. This container is the foundation for our innovative new chicken coop—a concept I've been working on since writing about it in my book.
Traditional chicken coops typically require separate areas for feeding and housing, which isn't ideal for our hydroponic feeding system. So, I started brainstorming ways to integrate these functions into one efficient setup. The idea was inspired by FarmBox Fodder Farm, which grows fodder for 2,000 chickens. I thought, "How can we scale that down for small-scale farmers?" And that's how our "chicken farm in a box" was born.
We're transforming the shipping container into a fully functional coop with a work area for washing eggs and sprouting chicken feed. This innovative solution is both economical and practical, designed to streamline operations while keeping our hens healthy and happy.
This project is a significant milestone for us, and we're eager to share the process with our community. Want to see how it's coming along? Check out our latest updates and photos on our Facebook page. And if you're feeling inspired, we're always looking for volunteers to help with our infrastructure projects—we even provide lunch for those who lend a hand!
